Why we use the USPS- and always will.
If you’ve been watching the news recently, (or even if you haven’t) I'm sure you are well aware that the world is in the midst of an ongoing crisis. Obviously, many parts of our everyday life have been affected by COVID-19. Yet one integral part of our mundane lives have been significantly impacted, and it is barely being discussed. The United States Postal Service is struggling to hold on in this pandemic. Quite frankly, even long before Corona was ever a “thing,” the USPS was in serious financial trouble. Let me start from the beginning.
In 2006 the Postal Accountability and Enhancement Act assured that the postal services workers would receive prepaid health and retirement benefits. This law was made with hopes of the postal service generating revenue off of their workforce manually delivering packages all over the country. Yet, this is not what happened. The act ended up burdening the USPS with a surplus amount of debt, due to the fact that they owed their aging workers their promised benefits. On top of all this, the business model for the USPS was severely outdated. The business structure of USPS was a topic of conversation amongst bureaucratic discussions, but has since taken a back seat, due to the fact that privatized businesses such as UPS and Fed-Ex, have been picking up the USPS slack. In more recent months, revenue for the USPS is shrinking even faster than before due to the economic collapse during COVID-19. Without significant help from congress, it is going to be a long and difficult road ahead for the USPS. However, there is still hope.
People are rallying around the fact that the USPS is a historic part of American culture. It provides our country with a constitutional right that we have possessed from the beginning. Post offices and mail delivery is an important part of everyday life that we too often take for granted or do not even think to consider. But the USPS employs over 220,000 Americans and offers us a service at a much lower rate than the other privatized mail services. Not only does the postal service employ hundreds of thousands of employees, but it is also a community builder, and has been devoted to diversifying it’s network of employees, as well as where they will deliver. The USPS created zip codes and overnight mail services and with the support of American businesses, it can be a trailblazer again.
That is why 585 by Zachary’s is a USPS supporter and why we strictly deliver our products through the United States Postal Service systems. Our core beliefs at 585 align with many of the USPS, such as: Customers come first, and we offer luxury service at the most affordable prices.
